DMK Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi strongly criticized the BJP’s proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy on Friday, stating that it is designed to benefit the ruling party while undermining the autonomy of states. Speaking at the sidelines of the ‘Kalaignar 100’ quiz program in Thanjavur, she accused the BJP of attempting to centralize power at the expense of state rights, particularly in non-BJP ruled regions.Kanimozhi claimed that the BJP’s broader agenda includes measures such as the ‘One Nation, One Ration’ scheme and the imposition of a one-language policy, all of which, she said, are aimed at controlling the states. “Through these policies, the BJP is conspiring to take control of everything, weakening the federal structure of the country and trampling upon the rights of states,” she remarked.
Highlighting the potential dangers of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, Kanimozhi asserted that it offers no tangible benefits to the public but serves only the political ambitions of the BJP. “This policy is not for the people, but for the BJP’s gain. They will go to any lengths for political advantage,” she said.
The DMK MP emphasized the critical role her party has played in resisting such policies. “Although the BJP is determined to force their anti-people policies across the country, Chief Minister M K Stalin and the DMK have been steadfast in thwarting their attempts. The DMK will continue to fight to protect democracy and safeguard state rights,” she asserted.
In response to questions about the 2018 Thoothukudi anti-Sterlite protests, where police firing resulted in the deaths of 13 civilians, Kanimozhi demanded a detailed inquiry into the promotion of the official responsible for ordering the firing. “A thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure accountability in this matter,” she concluded.
The DMK’s opposition to the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal aligns with its broader stance of defending federalism and opposing centralization of power by the BJP. The debate around the policy is expected to intensify in the coming months, as various political parties voice their positions on the matter.
