In response to the challenges of managing large crowds, especially after the chaos at metro stations following the recent airshow, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to introduce a single tapping system at Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates during major events in the city.The proposal aims to improve passenger flow and prevent overcrowding, which became a significant issue last Sunday when metro stations were overwhelmed with people. CMRL officials are considering innovative solutions to manage such situations, with discussions underway with SBI to implement this system.
An official from CMRL emphasized that adding more AFC gates alone would not solve the problem, and a seamless, efficient technique like single tapping could make a big difference. However, this system would be easier to implement with closed-loop travel cards, while NCMC cards, which require tapping at both entry and exit gates, would need software modifications. CMRL will work with SBI to make the necessary adjustments.
A protocol is also being developed to enable quick passage at entry points, with commuters charged at exit gates. For instance, at busy stations like Government Estate, the crowds could pass through AFC gates and be charged upon exiting, using the single-tap method. CMRL is still in the early stages of evaluating the best methods to implement this plan.
