Veteran Tamil Nadu journalist Murasoli Selvam, a towering figure in the world of Tamil journalism and politics, passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday morning. He was 82 years old and had been battling health complications. Selvam, the former editor of Murasoli, the official publication of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), played a significant role in shaping the political narrative in Tamil Nadu through his writings.
Selvam held an esteemed position within the DMK, not only as the brother of former Union Minister Murasoli Maran but also as the son-in-law of the late DMK patriarch, M. Karunanidhi. His contributions to Tamil journalism and his deep ties to the state’s politics left an indelible mark.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, visibly shaken by the loss, expressed his heartfelt condolences, referring to Selvam as a “brother-guide” who had been a constant pillar of support throughout his life. In a poignant statement, Stalin said, “After the departure of the Chief Artist, today I have lost that last shoulder to lean on—the pillar of principle.” Selvam’s mortal remains were brought to the residence of the late Karunanidhi for the public to pay their respects.
Political leaders across the spectrum paid tribute to Selvam. Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai expressed his condolences through a message on X (formerly Twitter), offering his sympathies to Chief Minister Stalin and Selvam’s family. “I am deeply saddened to know that Murasoli Selvam has passed away. My deepest condolences on behalf of the Tamil Nadu BJP. I pray for his soul to rest in peace,” Annamalai wrote.
Superstar Rajinikanth, a longtime friend of Selvam, also took to X to mourn the loss, writing, “Mr. Murasoli Selvam was a wonderful man and a longtime friend of mine. I am deeply saddened by his passing. My deepest sympathies to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
Selvam is survived by his wife Selvi, daughter of Karunanidhi, and their daughter. His passing marks the end of an era in Tamil journalism, leaving behind a rich legacy that will be remembered for years to come. The outpouring of condolences from political leaders, celebrities, and the public reflects the deep respect and affection Selvam garnered throughout his life.
