Black, starring Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar, ventures into the niche genre of sci-fi thrillers, tackling complex ideas like multiple timelines and parallel realities. Directed by KG Balasubramani, the film is an ambitious attempt inspired by the Hollywood film Coherence. While the core concept is intriguing, the execution is uneven, making Black an interesting yet somewhat flawed experience.
The film follows Vasanth (Jiiva) and Aranya (Priya Bhavani Shankar), a couple spending a weekend in their new villa near the Chennai coastline. What begins as a peaceful getaway quickly spirals into a series of strange occurrences, where they encounter different versions of themselves. As they struggle to understand if these are paranormal events or scientifically explainable phenomena, the film delves into the complex themes of multiple realities.
Black takes its time to set up the main plot, and the first half of the film is marred by unnecessary distractions, such as a bar fight and two out-of-place songs, which test the audience’s patience. However, once the movie picks up pace and focuses on the core sci-fi element, it demands full attention and successfully engages viewers with its layered narrative.
One of the strengths of the film is its ability to introduce new elements each time Vasanth and Aranya travel to different timelines, keeping the audience invested. The evolving dynamics between the couple add emotional depth to the story, making you root for them as they navigate this confusing, multi-dimensional puzzle.

While Black has an intriguing concept and strong performances, it stumbles in explaining its sci-fi aspects. The film could have benefited from simplifying the complex scientific ideas to make it more accessible to a wider audience.
