Saidapet GH to be expanded at a cost of Rs 15.50 cr

In a significant move to upgrade healthcare facilities in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Program (TNHSRP) has approved the construction of three additional floors over the existing second floor of the Maternity and Child Health (MCH) wing at the Government Peripheral Hospital in Saidapet. The project, which is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to serve the public, has been allocated Rs 15.50 crore in funding from the World Bank.

The expansion comes in response to the growing demand for services at the Saidapet Government Hospital, which has been catering to an increasing number of road traffic accident victims in addition to its core services in maternal and child health. The existing infrastructure was deemed inadequate to meet the rising needs, prompting the request for an extension to the hospital building.

The proposal to extend the building vertically by adding three more floors was approved by the State Empowered Committee, with the sanctioning of Rs 15.50 crore granted through the Public Works Department (PWD). The funds will be disbursed by the Director of Medical Education (DME).

The new floors will include critical facilities such as a pediatric ward with ICU beds, a post-natal ward, a medical ward, operation theatres, duty doctor rooms, and other essential infrastructure to ensure better healthcare delivery. The total area covered by the new construction will span 33,994.32 square feet, further bolstering the hospital’s capacity to handle a broader range of medical needs.

This expansion is part of the Tamil Nadu government’s continued effort to improve the healthcare system and ensure access to quality medical services for the growing population.
