After the recent accident involving the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express, full restoration of train services is expected to be completed by Sunday night. Suburban train services between Chennai Central and Gummidipoondi, which had been affected, are now operating with an increased frequency of one hour. Starting Monday morning, services will return to the regular 20-minute interval.An official from the Chennai division of Southern Railway confirmed that track work on both main lines was completed, allowing up and down trains to resume service as of Sunday morning.
Damaged coaches from the accident will be transported to Tondiarpet and Basin Bridge Yards within a week for decommissioning. Meanwhile, two of the three passengers hospitalized at Perambur Railway Hospital have been discharged, with the third, who sustained minor head injuries, expected to be released soon.
The Southern Railway press release confirmed that the second down (DN) line was deemed fit for traffic at 7:00 a.m. Sunday, with overhead equipment (OHE) and signaling works completed shortly after. By 9:08 a.m., Train No. 12482 Dr. MGR Chennai Central – Shalimar Coromandel Express had successfully passed through the accident site at Kavaraipettai.
The first EMU service to Gummidipoondi was operated at 8:40 a.m. on Sunday, following Saturday’s limited services up to Minjur due to ongoing restoration efforts.
With the main line now fully operational, normal suburban and express train services have been restored in record time following the incident.
