For the past two days, frontline workers, especially those from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), have been working tirelessly on the ground, battling waterlogged streets, and ensuring the city returns to normalcy after the heavy downpours caused by the Northeast monsoon. As the rain continued to batter Chennai, these workers, equipped with pumps, brooms, and cleaning equipment, were seen across various localities, clearing floodwater and debris from roads and residential areas.
Chief Minister MK Stalin visited Elephant Gate to personally commend the dedication and hard work of the corporation workers, who have been relentless in their efforts. “These frontline workers are the unsung heroes of our city. Theyâve worked round the clock to mitigate the effects of the rain, ensuring safety and cleanliness for the people of Chennai,” Stalin said during his visit.

Several workers shared their experiences, with one worker, S. Kumar, stating, “We’ve been on the ground for 48 hours without much rest, but it’s our duty to make sure the city is safe and clean for everyone.” Another worker, Lakshmi, who has been part of the clean-up operations in Velachery, said, “Itâs hard work, but when we see the roads clear of water and people able to move freely, itâs all worth it.”
The government has also provided food and shelter to the workers at multiple sites and ensured the availability of medical support, if needed, as they continue their critical operations across the city.
Chennai residents have expressed gratitude for the swift action by the GCC workers, with many taking to social media to share their appreciation.
