Ahead of the Deepavali festivities, Tamil Nadu Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar announced that 14,016 buses will be deployed to facilitate smooth travel for passengers. The buses will operate from key locations in Chennai, including Koyambedu, Madhavaram, and Kilambakkam.
In addition to the increased bus services, a 24-hour control center has been set up to address passenger concerns, with the public encouraged to reach out at 9445014436. The Minister also emphasized that strict action will be taken against Omni bus operators who charge excessive fares during the festival rush. “If passengers are overcharged, they can file complaints at 18004256151, and action will be assured,” Sivasankar stated.
Responding to rumors of privatization, the Minister firmly clarified, “There is no plan to privatize the transport department.”
He further shared that discussions with Omni bus owners are scheduled for the 24th of this month to ensure fair practices during the Diwali season. Sivasankar highlighted the growing number of people opting for government buses, adding, “So far, 1,02,000 people have made advance bookings for Diwali travel, and the numbers are increasing.”
To meet the demand, private buses will be contracted and operated under government-fixed fares. “We are committed to ensuring that all travelers can reach their destinations comfortably and affordably during Diwali,” he concluded.
