The first teaser for RJ Balaji’s upcoming film Sorgavaasal offers a glimpse into the gritty life inside prison walls. Directed by debutant Sidharth Vishwanath, an assistant of renowned filmmaker Pa Ranjith, the 1.42-minute teaser introduces the film’s main characters and their roles within the prison.Selvaraghavan, playing the role of Siga, emerges as a powerful figure whose authority commands respect among the inmates. Karunaas portrays a police officer, while Balaji Sakthivel plays Bashir, a cook in the prison canteen. RJ Balaji, whose character appears to endure immense suffering during his time in jail, is hinted to be wrongfully convicted, though the specifics of his storyline remain undisclosed. The teaser also briefly touches upon his relationship with his partner, adding emotional depth to his character.
Set in Chennai in 1999, the film hints at an intense narrative centered around an attempted prison escape. Netflix, which holds the post-theatrical streaming rights, teased the plot with the statement, “No door can stop this jailbreak. RJ Balaji will break down heaven’s doors to come to you,” suggesting Balaji’s character will make a bold escape attempt.
Alongside the main cast, the film stars Natty, Saniya Iyappan, Sharaf-U-Dheen, Hakkim Shah, Anthonythasan, Ravi Raghavendra, and Samuel Robinson. Sorgavaasal is written by Thamizh Praba, Ashwin Ravichandran, and director Sidharth Vishwanath.
