Islamabad, Oct 24: A Pakistani high court on Wednesday granted bail to Bushra Bibi, the wife of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, in the Toshakhana corruption case involving the alleged illegal sale of state gifts, nearly nine months after she was arrested.The Islamabad High Court judge, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, accepted the bail plea of the 50-year-old former first lady against a surety bond of Rs1 million.
The court’s decision provides relief to Bushra, who was arrested after a court convicted and sentenced the couple to 14 years in jail in a corruption case on January 31.
During the hearing, Justice Aurangzeb questioned the Federal Investigation Agencyās (FIA) investigative officer about the necessity of further interrogation of the former first lady. The officer confirmed that no additional investigation was required.
The Toshakhana case involves allegations of corruption against Imran Khan and his wife for receiving profit from the sale of gifts received from foreign dignitaries.
Bushra is Khan’s third wife and a spiritual healer.
Meanwhile, the indictment proceedings against Khan and Bushra, scheduled on Wednesday were postponed due to security concerns as the hearing set to take place at Adiala Jail was moved to Islamabad’s Judicial Complex.
However, security concerns continued to prevent the proceedings, and the court rescheduled the indictment for October 26.
The acceptance of the bail application comes as a relief to Bushra as well as Khan, who has been insisting that she has nothing to do with the case to add to his agony.
A source told Geo News that Bibi is not wanted or arrested in any other case and can be released after the bail bond is submitted and a mandamus is duly issued.
