This month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the newly rejuvenated Poondi Makkam Kulam, a historical tank in Walajapet town near Ranipet, close to the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH-44). The revitalized waterbody now features upgraded facilities, including a paved walking path and children’s play areas, bringing both environmental and recreational benefits to local residents.
The Poondi Makkam Kulam, created in the 1890s by the Nawab of Arcot, was originally designed to store excess rainwater for irrigation purposes. Over the years, 15 more ponds and tanks have been developed in the town to serve the domestic water needs of Walajapet’s growing population. However, with time, the Poondi Makkam Kulam faced neglect, becoming a gathering place for anti-social elements. Its condition came to light during a routine inspection led by R. Gandhi, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles and MLA for Ranipet, who subsequently directed local officials to undertake a restoration project.
Under the Kalaignar Urban Development Scheme 2021-22, the Walajapet Municipality began the tank’s restoration with a budget of â‚č1.31 crore. The tank has now been desilted and deepened to a depth of five meters, enhancing its water-holding capacity and allowing floodwater from stormwater drains to flow freely into the tank. This, in turn, will help replenish groundwater levels in a three-kilometer radius around the tank.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the rejuvenated tank offers new recreational facilities. A three-meter-wide tiled walkway runs along the bund, making it an attractive spot for walkers. Twelve concrete seating areas, washrooms, and water taps have been installed along the pathway. For children, two play areas with slides and swings add a family-friendly touch.
Security and infrastructure upgrades also include solar-powered LED streetlights, a sturdy compound wall, and signages for navigation. To ensure safety, the tank is bordered with steel railings, and steps on one side provide easy access for maintenance work.
Around the tank, saplings of native fruit-bearing trees—such as guava, jamun, iluppai, mango, and gooseberry—have been planted to enhance the green cover and support biodiversity.
Spanning 4,400 square feet at the heart of Walajapet, Poondi Makkam Kulam has long served as an essential source for the town’s groundwater table. The restoration project not only preserves this valuable resource but also transforms it into a community asset, blending heritage with modern utility for the town’s residents.
