Governor R.N. Ravi voiced his concern about the persistence of practices that highlight caste identity, such as the custom of wearing caste threads, stating that it is painful to see people still clinging to these divisive traditions.
The celebration of State Formation Day for various states and union territories was held at Raj Bhavan in Guindy, where Governor Ravi addressed the gathering.
In his speech, the Governor remarked, “Though people across different states of our country have their distinct identities, we unite in spirit when celebrating our state’s formation. Traditionally, state governments have celebrated this day through cultural events, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of celebrating it nationwide.”
He noted that today, many states across India commemorate this day, with armed forces personnel also proudly taking part.
Governor Ravi reflected on India’s unity, built on the philosophies of sages, gurus, and saints, which guided people to live harmoniously despite the lack of advanced technology. “In ancient Bharat, there was no division or concept of majority and minority. It was under British rule that divisiveness was introduced. States were formed solely for administrative purposes, yet political motives have since divided people along lines of caste, language, ethnicity, and religion.”
The Governor expressed his disappointment over the continuation of the caste-thread custom, calling it a divisive practice. “Why should we need such divisions among people living on the same soil? Bharat is a nation rich in diverse cultures, not a country with a singular culture. We must celebrate our state and local cultures while cherishing our unity.”
The event saw the participation of dignitaries, including Lieutenant General Karanbir Singh of the Southern Command, writer Kariyali, and representatives from various states.
