Madurai, Nov 8: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officials have indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may attend the inauguration ceremony of the new Pamban rail bridge in Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram district. The Pamban railway bridge, which connects Rameswaram to the mainland, has historically faced frequent corrosion due to sea winds, leading to high maintenance costs. Trains crossing the old bridge were restricted to speeds of 10 km/h for safety reasons. To modernize this crucial infrastructure, a project valued at âč550 crore was implemented to construct a new, advanced rail bridge, which has now been completed. Structural integrity tests are currently being conducted.
The old Pamban bridge was designed to split in the middle and lift upwards to allow ships to pass through. In contrast, the new bridge features a sensor-operated vertical lift mechanism, which allows sections of the bridge to rise vertically for ship passage. This innovative design is the first of its kind in India.
Rameswaram holds significant national and spiritual importance as the southern counterpart to the northern Kashi. Due to this prominence, there is a strong possibility that Prime Minister Modi will attend the bridgeâs opening ceremony. Senior railway officials, including technical experts, are actively inspecting the bridge, and Indian Commissioner of Railway Safety A.M. Choudhary is scheduled to conduct a review on November 13-14.
Preparations for the inauguration could see the event taking place between December 4 and 12. Notably, Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai is expected to return to India by November 27 after completing a political studies course in London. Following his return, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is anticipated to heat up, with plans for Annamalai to kickstart preparations for the 2026 State Assembly elections by organizing a grand rally in Coimbatore.
The BJP is keen on having the Prime Minister participate in both the Rameswaram event and the Coimbatore rally. This dual appearance is seen as a significant opportunity for the party to gain momentum in Tamil Nadu.
