Commuters using the Chennai Beach – Velachery MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) route can now rejoice as operations at the Park Town station have officially resumed on November 11. This marks the return of regular services at a vital station that connects many passengers to important landmarks such as Moore Market and Dr. MGR Chennai Central Railway Station.Prior to today, although the Chennai Beach – Velachery MRTS line had resumed services on October 29, 2024, Park Town station remained closed due to ongoing construction. As a result, MRTS trains traveling along this route had bypassed the station, causing inconvenience to commuters who depended on it for their daily travels.
The suspension of MRTS services had begun in August 2023, as part of the work on the fourth railway line between Chennai Egmore and Chennai Beach. This 14-month disruption had limited MRTS services to only the Velachery to Chintadripet stretch, forcing passengers to rely on alternative modes of transport, including MTC buses and auto-rickshaws, to reach Chennai Central.
With the reopening of Park Town station, the full MRTS route is now operational again, restoring services between Chennai Beach and Velachery, and including the intermediate stops at Park Town and Fort. This will not only alleviate the travel burden for daily commuters but will also help decongest road traffic by providing a reliable public transport option.
The resumption of services at Park Town is expected to enhance the MRTS network’s connectivity and improve accessibility to key destinations in the city, ensuring smoother, faster, and more efficient travel for passengers. With the completion of this phase of work, the Chennai Beach – Velachery MRTS line is once again fully restored, reaffirming the commitment to expanding and upgrading the city’s public transport infrastructure.
