AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has called for urgent action to end the prolonged ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur. In a strongly worded appeal, Palaniswami urged the BJP-led Union government and the Manipur State government to restore democracy and bring peace to the violence-hit region.Referring to the ethnic clashes that began in May 2023 and have persisted for over 16 months, the AIADMK leader emphasized the need for immediate intervention to end the bloodshed and protect citizens.
Drawing parallels to the Sri Lankan Tamil genocide during the ethnic war’s final stages in 2008-2009, Palaniswami reminded the Centre to avoid the mistakes of the past. “The then-central government and its alliance partner in Tamil Nadu were silent witnesses to the killings of innocent Tamils. Unlike their predecessors, the present regime must act decisively to resolve the Manipur conflict and safeguard democracy,” he stated.
Escalating Violence
Recent acts of arson targeting the residences of ministers and MLAs have heightened tensions in Manipur. In response, the Centre dispatched 50 companies of paramilitary forces to the State on Monday to control the situation. However, the AIADMK leader underscored that such measures alone are insufficient.
Palaniswami, who posted his appeal on social media while tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, expressed deep concern over the continued unrest. “The ongoing turmoil endangers lives and livelihoods, particularly those of the poor and middle class,” he noted.
Call for Democratic Restoration
The AIADMK leader stressed the need to prioritize restoring democracy in Manipur and implementing concrete measures to rebuild trust between communities. He urged the governments to adopt a people-centric approach and ensure that the rights and safety of all citizens are upheld.
As the conflict drags on, Palaniswami’s appeal highlights the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution and preventing further escalation in the already volatile State.
