A new low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on November 23, according to the Chennai Meteorological Centre. The system is expected to intensify gradually, prompting the weather bureau to send an official advisory to the Tamil Nadu government to take precautionary measures.
The weather report highlights widespread rainfall in southern and delta districts of Tamil Nadu. Over the past 24 hours, Vedharanyam in Nagapattinam district recorded the highest rainfall of 10 cm, followed by Kodiyakarai in Mayiladuthurai with 9 cm and Velankanni in Nagapattinam with 8 cm.
An atmospheric circulation currently exists over the Comorin Sea near southern districts. Additionally, another upper air cyclonic circulation is expected to form tomorrow over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining areas. This is likely to lead to the development of a low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on November 23.
The low-pressure system is forecast to move northwestward and intensify into a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal in the subsequent two days.
Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is expected at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until November 24.
The Chennai region, including suburban areas, will experience cloudy skies for the next two days. Misty conditions are expected during early morning hours.
The Meteorological Centre has urged the public to remain cautious and advised local authorities to be prepared for potential weather-related disruptions.
