Cyclone to Form Over Bay of Bengal Today; Tamil Nadu Prepares for Heavy Rainfall


The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm today, as per the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai. The system, moving towards Tamil Nadu, is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Chennai and other coastal districts over the next four days.

Meteorological Update
The RMC’s report highlights that as of yesterday morning, the depression strengthened into a deep depression. It was centered approximately 590 km south-southeast of Nagapattinam, 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 800 km south-southeast of Chennai. Moving at a speed of 12 kmph in a north-northwest direction, the system is likely to intensify into a cyclone today.

Once formed, the cyclone is expected to move along the Tamil Nadu coast without making landfall.

The cyclone’s influence is predicted to cause widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu. Coastal districts, including Chennai, are expected to witness heavy downpours starting today.
