Despite heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Benzal, Tamil Nadu has managed to avoid significant damage, thanks to proactive measures by the state government, according to Health Minister Ma. Subramanian.
The minister inaugurated a free medical camp in Maduvankarai, Chennai, yesterday, part of 500 camps organized across seven districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram. Speaking at the event, he said, “In the past, cyclones caused severe damage and fear among people. This time, due to the government’s preventive actions and coordinated efforts, major impacts have been avoided.”
He highlighted that areas like Mayilam in Villupuram received 50 cm of rainfall, while Chennai recorded 18-20 cm of rain in 24 hours. Despite such heavy rainfall in districts like Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore, the damage was minimal.
Since the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, the government has conducted 51,707 special medical camps, benefiting over 2.8 million people. Currently, 500 camps are operating in Chennai and other districts. In addition, 300 camps are being held in rain-affected districts like Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, and Cuddalore.
Minister Subramanian also noted that Chennai’s reservoirs, which are critical for the city’s water supply, currently hold 7 TMC of water. More rainfall is needed to prevent future water scarcity and drought. The government plans to continue organizing medical camps until the monsoon ends to ensure public health and safety.
