PMK leader Anbumani has urged the state government to provide jobs to differently abled individuals. He emphasized that despite the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which reserves 4% of government jobs for persons with disabilities, many posts remain unfilled.
Anbumani pointed out that the Tamil Nadu government had announced that it would fill up all backlog vacancies for persons with disabilities within a year, through special recruitment drives. However, he lamented that the announcement and the subsequent government order have remained on paper.
He urged the government to revisit the vacancies and provide more jobs to differently abled individuals. Anbumani also demanded that the government relax the rules and provide permanent employment to differently abled individuals who have been working on a temporary basis for over two years.
The Tamil Nadu government had increased the reservation for persons with disabilities from 3% to 4% in 2017. However, Anbumani pointed out that many government departments have not implemented the reservation properly, resulting in a lack of job opportunities for differently abled individuals.
Anbumani’s demand comes at a time when there is a growing need to provide equal opportunities to differently abled individuals. The Tamil Nadu government must take concrete steps to fill up the backlog vacancies and provide more job opportunities to differently abled individuals.
