The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded a ₹3,657.53 crore contract to BEML Limited for manufacturing driverless metro trains as part of its Phase 2 project. According to a statement released by CMRL, the contract involves the design, manufacturing, supply, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of 70 driverless metro trains, each consisting of three coaches. These trains will operate on Corridors 3 and 5 of the Phase 2 network.The Letter of Acceptance (LOA) for the contract was issued to BEML on November 28, 2024. As part of the agreement, BEML will also provide training for personnel and ensure comprehensive maintenance of the trains and depot equipment for 15 years.
The first driverless metro train is expected to be delivered to CMRL by 2026. Following rigorous track and operational trials, the remaining trains will be handed over in phases from March 2027 to April 2029.
This contract is the second in a series of three procurement agreements for driverless trains under the Phase 2 project. The first contract was awarded earlier, and the prototype train has already been delivered to CMRL’s Poonamallee depot. The third contract is currently in progress.
