A quick chat with Arun Vijay
Q: You’ve become synonymous with resilience and reinvention in Tamil cinema. Can you share what drives this journey of yours?
A: My journey has been a blend of highs, lows, and everything in between. Those early struggles shaped me into the person I am today—more patient, more grounded, and definitely more determined. I’ve always believed in evolving, not just as an actor but as a person. Cinema is my passion, and my love for it fuels me to keep pushing boundaries.
Q: You’ve had a career resurgence with standout roles in Yennai Arindhaal, Kuttram 23, and Thadam. How did you script this turnaround?
A: It wasn’t easy, but I believe perseverance pays off. Post-2015, I consciously decided to choose roles that were unique and impactful. Yennai Arindhaal was a game-changer; Victor was a character that brought out a new dimension in me. Then came Kuttram 23, where I explored a strong, realistic protagonist. With Thadam, I delved into dual roles, which challenged me as an actor. Each film was a stepping stone that helped redefine my space in the industry.
Q: Let’s talk about Vanangaan. Bala is known for his intense storytelling. How was the experience of working with him?
A:  It’s been an absolute dream. Bala sir is a visionary. When he approached me, I was thrilled but also understood the responsibility that came with it. He transforms his actors completely—whether it’s the look, body language, or emotions. For Vanangaan, he crafted a character that tested me to my core.
The shoot was an adventure in itself. We filmed in crowded locations, and my look was so different that people didn’t even recognise me. It added an authentic edge to the film. Bala sir’s dedication is unparalleled. There were moments when he got so immersed in a scene that he forgot to call “cut”! His passion is infectious, and it drives everyone on set to deliver their best.
Q: Bala initially planned the film with Suriya. What were your thoughts when you were approached?
A: Suriya sir is a close family friend, so when Bala sir approached me, I immediately called him. He was incredibly encouraging and happy for me. It felt like everything fell into place perfectly. Taking on a role originally meant for Suriya sir is a responsibility I don’t take lightly, and I gave it my all.
Q: Your script choices post-2015 have been impeccable. What’s your mantra while selecting a story now?
A: I focus on the bigger picture. A script should resonate with the audience, not just for its entertainment value but for its emotional depth too. I’ve realized that today’s viewers are exposed to global cinema, thanks to OTT platforms, and they expect fresh narratives.
Whether it’s a gripping story, complex characters, or raw emotions, I look for scripts that stay with people even after they leave the theatre. And yes, I always strive to bring something unique to the table—be it through my performance, appearance, or the character’s arc.
Q: Bala’s films often demand intense preparation. How did you prepare for Vanangaan?
A: Preparation for a Bala sir film is unlike anything else. He creates a world so rich in detail that you have to completely surrender to it. For Vanangaan, I immersed myself in the character’s psyche. It’s a deeply emotional story, and Bala sir pushed me to tap into emotions I didn’t know I had. Every day on set was like a masterclass in filmmaking.
Q: Finally, what do you hope audiences will take away from Vanangaan?
A: This film is Bala sir at his best—raw, emotional, and powerful. I believe it’s a story that will connect with people on a profound level. For me, being part of Vanangaan is more than just a career milestone; it’s an artistic journey. I hope the audience celebrates Bala sir’s genius and experiences the magic he brings to the screen. I can’t wait for everyone to witness this labor of love.
Q: Any final thoughts for your fans?
Arun Vijay: To my fans, I owe everything to your unwavering support. You’ve stood by me through every phase of my career, and that keeps me striving for excellence. Vanangaan is for you, and I promise it’s going to be worth the wait!
