Deputy Leader of the Opposition RB Udhayakumar on Wednesday alleged that the DMK regime has created a fearful environment for women in Tamil Nadu, citing public concerns over the recent sexual assault case at Annamalai University (AU).
Raising a Special Call Attention Motion in the State Assembly, Udhayakumar criticized the ruling party for its handling of the case. He blamed the state government for leaking the First Information Report (FIR) related to the incident and questioned, “Who is that SIR? The entire country is shocked by this case. What is the DMK’s stand on the issue? The Chief Minister has not yet clarified the matter.”
He also questioned the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerâs press conference held during the early stages of the investigation. “Why did the Commissioner of Police (CoP) claim that only one person was involved, that no calls were made to a ‘SIR,’ and that the accused’s phone was in flight mode? Who was he trying to protect? Despite the involvement of a DMK party functionary, no action has been taken against the accused,” he said.
Udhayakumar accused the DMK of failing to ensure the safety of women, stating, “Not a single day passes without reports of crimes against women in the state.” He also raised questions about how a person who had been detained under the Goondas Act three times managed to enter the university campus.
Responding during Zero Hour, Leader of the House Duraimurugan countered the allegations, stating that crimes against women occur across all regimes. “What happened in Pollachi?” he sarcastically retorted, referencing a high-profile sexual assault case that occurred during AIADMKâs tenure.
The AIADMK vowed to continue its fight for justice for the victim while highlighting public concerns about womenâs safety under the current regime. The opposition’s criticism has intensified the debate over the government’s accountability in addressing crimes against women.
