The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 10 fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly crossing the international maritime boundary and engaging in fishing activities in Sri Lankan waters.
According to reports, the fishermen, who set out to sea from Nagapattinam, were apprehended near Karaikal while fishing. The Sri Lankan Navy seized their fishing boat during the operation.
The detained fishermen have been transferred to the Kankesanthurai camp in Sri Lanka for further questioning and investigation.
Incidents of Tamil Nadu fishermen being apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing maritime boundaries have been a recurring issue, causing distress among the fishing community. Fishermen’s associations have repeatedly called for a permanent solution to the boundary disputes to ensure the safety and livelihoods of those dependent on fishing in the region.
The Tamil Nadu government is expected to intervene and seek diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the detained fishermen.
