The Tamil Nadu government announced that all TASMAC outlets in the state would implement computerised billing by March, ensuring transparency and preventing overcharging of customers. The system will allow customers to pay through QR codes, and the exact price of the purchased bottles will be displayed in the billing system, eliminating the scope for extra charges.The announcement was made in the Madras High Court during a hearing related to a petition challenging a TASMAC circular. The circular permits the suspension of all employees in a shop, including the supervisor, if overcharging is detected. Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy upheld the circular, stating that such actions should be taken only if prima facie evidence shows all employees’ involvement in the misconduct.
The Tamil Nadu TASMAC Virpanaiyaalargal Nala Sangam had filed a petition seeking to quash the circular, arguing that the concept of vicarious liability or joint liability is not recognized under Indian law. However, the Additional Advocate General (AAG) J. Ravindran defended the circular, emphasizing that the upcoming computerised system would prevent tampering or manipulation of QR codes and billing.
“The new system will ensure accuracy in pricing and prevent fraudulent practices by shop employees. The process is underway, and all TASMAC outlets across the state will be fully computerised by March,” the AAG added.
This move is expected to bring greater accountability and fairness to TASMAC operations, enhancing customer trust and streamlining revenue collection for the state.
