The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a series of beautification projects under five major flyovers in the city—Doveton, Kalaivanar, Peters Road – Conronsmith Road, Rangarajapuram, and Vyasarpadi. These projects aim to transform the areas into well-designed public spaces with landscaping, solar-powered lighting, CCTV surveillance, pedestrian pathways, and recreational facilities.
The initiative comes with a significant investment, with budgets allocated at ₹3.74 crore for the Kalaivanar flyover, ₹3.25 crore for the Doveton flyover, and ₹2.53 crore for the Rangarajapuram Railway Overbridge (ROB). The GCC has set a timeline of one year to complete these projects.
The beautification plans include the following:
Green Beds and Vertical Gardens: Green beds measuring 1.5 to 3 meters wide will be created, along with vertical gardens equipped with automated irrigation systems to ensure maintenance.
Concrete Pathways: Pedestrian pathways, 2 to 3 meters wide, will be constructed to improve walkability.
Drainage Systems: Advanced drainage systems will be installed to prevent waterlogging.
Amenities: Ornamental plants, benches, and play areas will enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the spaces.
Challenges in Existing Projects
Despite the ambitious plans, existing vertical gardens under bridges like Murasoli Maran and Kotturpuram remain poorly maintained due to a lack of funds and maintenance contracts. Experts have recommended using heat-resistant plants or sustainable alternatives like bamboo and lemongrass to ensure durability and reduce upkeep costs.
The beautification projects are part of GCC’s broader efforts to improve urban infrastructure and provide enhanced public spaces. If executed and maintained effectively, these initiatives could set a benchmark for urban design and sustainability in Chennai.
