Chennai: A recent study conducted by the Adyar Cancer Research Centre has revealed that 13 out of every 1 lakh children in Chennai were diagnosed with cancer in 2022.
The study was based on cancer data collected from hospitals across Chennai. The findings were released recently.
Key Findings of the Study
A special registry for pediatric cancer was introduced in 2022 to track cancer cases among children and adolescents up to 19 years of age. Data was collected from 17 hospitals in Chennai, and affected children were closely monitored to compile accurate records.
According to the study, 241 new pediatric cancer cases were recorded in 2022, including 139 boys and 102 girls.
Types of Cancer Identified
Blood cancer (leukemia) was found to be the most common type among affected children.
Lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system) was the second most prevalent.
Sarcomas (soft tissue cancer) and bone cancer were also reported in several cases.
Survival Rate
Detailed medical records were available for 170 children.
Among them, 71% are still alive.
Of the surviving children, 81% have fully recovered from cancer.
The study provides critical insights into pediatric cancer trends in Chennai, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in improving survival rates.
