GCC to build beach ramp for differently-abled at Thiruvanmiyur

In a move to make beaches more accessible for differently-abled individuals, the Chennai Corporation has floated a tender to construct a wooden pathway at Thiruvanmiyur Beach under the Singara Chennai project. The project is estimated to cost ₹1.18 crore and will be the third such ramp in the city.
Earlier, ramps were installed at Marina Beach and Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar at a cost of ₹1.61 crore to facilitate access for differently-abled visitors. The new ramp at Thiruvanmiyur Beach, located in Adyar Zone (Zone 13), will be made using Red Meranti, Babool, and Brazilian IPE wood. However, differently-abled individuals have urged the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to use more durable materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions and prevent damage from public misuse.
A differently-abled activist highlighted concerns over the damaged ramps at Marina Beach and criticized the lack of timely maintenance by civic authorities. She also emphasized the need for the Tamil Nadu government to expand such projects to more beaches across the state.
The tender for the Thiruvanmiyur Beach ramp will be opened on February 12 at 3:30 AM.
