Key Corridors & Cost Estimates
ORR to Maduravoyal (8.1 km) via Tambaram-Puzhal Chennai Bypass – ₹1,476 crore
ORR to Sriperumbudur (13.1 km) via Chennai-Bengaluru Highway – ₹1,808 crore
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the projects in the Lok Sabha, responding to questions from DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran.
Impact & Future Plans
These corridors will allow trucks to bypass traffic-heavy routes, improving freight movement to ports.
During festival weekends, intercity buses may also be diverted via these new corridors.
The Maduravoyal-Port elevated corridor, currently under construction, will further streamline freight transport.
Other upcoming projects in Chennai’s outskirts include:
Widening of ECR from Mamallapuram to Puducherry
Expansion of the Chengalpet-Tindivanam section of Chennai-Trichy Highway
A new 18-km elevated corridor from Kilambakkam to Mahindra City (₹2,950 crore), replacing the originally planned 27-km Tambaram-Chengalpet corridor on GST Road
Concerns Over Delays
Residents have welcomed the projects but raised concerns over delays. B. Ganesh, a resident of Tambaram, pointed out that GST Road congestion has worsened, now extending beyond Chengalpet to Tindivanam. He urged authorities to prioritise the GST Road project to ease growing traffic woes.
