The abrupt shift in U.S. refugee policy under the Trump administration has left nonprofit organizations scrambling. These groups, once bolstered by increased arrivals and federal support, now face funding cuts, layoffs, and uncertainty.
The State Department’s stop-work order has severely impacted the resettlement sector, disrupting crucial services for refugees and forcing nonprofits to stretch limited resources. While the Biden-era community sponsorship program offered a promising alternative, recent foreign aid restrictions have stifled progress.
America has long been a beacon for those seeking refuge. Policies that weaken its resettlement infrastructure risk undermining that legacy. Instead of abrupt funding halts, a more consistent and humane approach is needed—one that supports both refugees and the organizations dedicated to helping them rebuild their lives.
