A taut thriller
Debutant director Aravind Rajagopal makes an impressive mark in Tamil cinema with Asthram, a gripping crime thriller that skillfully blends mystery, suspense, and strategic thinking inspired by Chess. This intelligently crafted film keeps audiences hooked, offering a unique and thought-provoking take on the thriller genre.
At the center of the story is Akilan (Shaam), a sharp and intuitive police officer who, while on medical leave, becomes drawn into a series of unexplained suicides. His investigative instincts push him to probe deeper, leading him to a complex web where Chess is more than just a game—it becomes the key to unlocking a disturbing truth. He is supported by his superior (Aroul D. Shankar) and his determined journalist wife Priya (Nira) as they navigate the intricate connections between Chess and the mysterious deaths.
What sets Asthram apart is its engaging screenplay, which keeps viewers invested in the unfolding mystery. The film steadily builds tension, leading to a thrilling climax that ties every clue together in a satisfying and impactful way. S. Sundaramoorthy’s background score enhances the suspense, adding intensity to key moments, while Kalyan Venkatraman’s cinematography visually amplifies the film’s gripping essence, making each frame immersive and compelling.
Shaam delivers a powerful performance, bringing depth and conviction to Akilan’s character. His portrayal balances intensity and subtlety, making him a compelling protagonist. The supporting cast, including Aroul D. Shankar and Nira, add strength to the narrative, ensuring every character plays a crucial role in the unfolding drama.
With its fresh premise and skillful execution, Asthram stands out as a smart and engaging crime thriller. The film not only delivers edge-of-the-seat entertainment but also challenges the audience’s intellect, making it a refreshing addition to Tamil cinema. Aravind Rajagopal’s debut is a success, and Asthram is a cinematic experience that leaves a lasting impression.
