New Delhi, Mar 21: India submitted the bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in the city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, March 20 according to the sources in Sports Ministry. The move is being seen as a major step towards making the Indian Olympic dream come true as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is eyeing to host the 2036 Summer Games in India.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitted a letter expressing their interest in hosting the 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games a few days ago. India last hosted a major sporting event back in 2010, which was also the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The Sports Ministry has finalized Ahmedabad as the venue for the sporting extravaganza, which is also in line to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2036.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) which is now also known as the Commonwealth Sport will start the evaluation process while the CGF General Assembly will finalize the appointment of the host country. Recently, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had also spoken about their plans to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
India also wanted to host all those disciplines which were axed from the 2026 Commonwealth Games to ensure that its medal tally is not affected when the event is held in Glasgow. However, that proposal was rejected by CGF. The Commonwealth Games have been struggling to find hosts in recent times and the fate of the upcoming edition was also left in jeopardy after the hosts Victoria in Australia backed out due to escalating costs.
Glasgow emerged as the saviour of the sporting event but cut down on the number of sports to ten to be held across four venues. Meanwhile, the last two major sporting events in India were both held in the national capital Delhi namely the Asian Games in 1982 and the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
