In the recent match against Delhi Capitals, CSK’s top order collapsed, losing three wickets within the first six overs, which set them back considerably in their chase of 184. Historically, Chepauk has been a fortress for CSK. However, this season has seen them suffer rare defeats at home, including a 50-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru—their first defeat to RCB at Chepauk since 2008. Coach Fleming expressed frustration over the team’s inability to read the pitch conditions effectively, stating, “We haven’t been able to read the wickets here in the last couple of years.”
Batting Order Challenges
The batting lineup has also faced scrutiny, particularly regarding the positioning of veteran MS Dhoni. At 43, Dhoni has been batting lower down the order, a decision influenced by his management of physical fitness post knee surgery in 2023. Coach Fleming explained that Dhoni is adjusting his playtime based on how he’s feeling on the day, contributing valuable leadership and wicket-keeping skills despite less time on the pitch.
