The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has set an ambitious target of ₹500 crore in property tax collections during the April incentive period for the first half of the 2025–26 financial year. This follows a record-breaking collection of ₹2,023 crore in 2024–25, the highest in the past 16 years.
Incentive for Early Payers
To encourage early payments, GCC is offering a 5% discount on net property tax for payments made between April 1 and April 30, with a maximum discount cap of ₹5,000. Last year, this incentive scheme helped collect ₹379 crore during the same period.
In an effort to enhance tax collection efficiency, GCC has decided to privatize tax data management. A tender was floated in March for maintaining records of property and professional tax collections and dues. Additionally, WhatsApp-based reminders with QR codes for easy payment will be sent to property owners.
Officials are optimistic that the positive response to the incentive scheme will help them achieve the new target. With streamlined tax management and digital reminders, GCC aims to further improve collections and taxpayer compliance in the coming financial year.
