The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across various districts of Tamil Nadu until May 18, 2025. This weather change is attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the state’s northern coastal regions. As a result, multiple districts are expected to witness heavy downpours, and residents are urged to remain alert.May 16, the rain is expected to intensify and extend to Erode, Salem, Namakkal, and Vellore in addition to the previously mentioned districts.
The forecast for May 17 includes heavy rain in central and northern districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, and the Karaikal region. The IMD has indicated that this trend is expected to continue on May 18, with Cuddalore joining the list of districts under a rain alert.
In Chennai, the weather is expected to remain relatively mild with light showers and partly cloudy skies. The maximum temperature is likely to stay below 38°C. However, weather blogger Srikanth has cautioned that if the cyclonic circulation intensifies into a low-pressure system, it could lead to more widespread and intense rainfall.
Authorities advise residents in the affected areas to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the forecasted period of heavy rain.
