D SUNDAR

A sea of devotees thronged the holy town of Kanchipuram today to witness the grand ‘Thiru Ther’ festival, a key event of the ongoing annual Brahmotsavam at the famous Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple.

The seventh day of the Brahmotsavam marked the majestic procession of the temple chariot, also known as the ‘Ther’, carrying the idol of Lord Varadaraja Perumal along with his divine consorts. The deities were beautifully decorated with silk garments, flowers, and dazzling jewellery for the occasion.

As the chariot began to roll out from the temple premises, loud chants of “Govinda Govinda” echoed through the streets. Devotees, many of whom had come from different parts of Tamil Nadu and other states, pulled the massive wooden chariot with ropes, considering it a blessing to do so.

The event is considered one of the most sacred and visually grand spectacles in Tamil Vaishnavite tradition. The towering temple car, adorned with colourful flags and decorations, moved slowly along its traditional route around the temple amid the rhythmic beats of traditional instruments and Vedic chanting.

To ensure smooth conduct of the festival and safety of the large crowd, the district administration had made elaborate arrangements. Barricades were put up along the procession path, first-aid stations were set up, drinking water was made available at key points, and additional police personnel were deployed to manage the crowd and avoid any untoward incident.

Speaking to reporters, a senior official said, “We have taken all necessary steps to ensure a hassle-free darshan for devotees. Medical teams and volunteers are also present to assist the public.”

The Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, also known as Perumal Kovil, is one of the 108 Divya Desams and holds immense religious significance. The annual Brahmotsavam draws lakhs of devotees every year, and the Thiru Ther festival is one of its main highlights.

Devotees believe that witnessing and participating in these celebrations brings divine blessings, peace, and prosperity.
