Chennai is set to enhance its urban landscape with the introduction of a 34-meter-tall ‘Super Tree’ at the Kalaignar Centenary Park, drawing inspiration from Singapore’s renowned Supertree Grove. This innovative structure aims to offer residents and tourists a unique vantage point to view the city, while also promoting green architecture and sustainable urban development.The Super Tree will feature a trunk enveloped in lush greenery, branching out into a canopy that serves as an elevated outdoor deck. The ten-story tower will be equipped with two elevators and staircases, leading visitors to an air-conditioned glass viewing deck. From this vantage point, guests can enjoy panoramic views of Chennai, including landmarks like the Gemini flyover. The structure will encompass approximately 1,200 square feet of indoor viewing space and an 1,850 square foot outdoor deck, designed to accommodate around 100 visitors at a time.
Constructed with energy-efficient materials, the Super Tree emphasizes sustainability and is poised to become both a tourist attraction and a serene retreat within the city. The project is part of the broader development of the Kalaignar Centenary Park, situated on a 6.09-acre plot reclaimed by the Tamil Nadu government in 2023. The park, developed at a cost of approximately ā¹46 crore, offers various amenities, including glasshouses, a rope car, musical fountains, and rainwater harvesting facilities.
The Kalaignar Centenary Park, inaugurated on October 7, 2024, commemorates the centenary of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Located on Cathedral Road in the Gopalapuram neighborhood, the park is strategically positioned between Senganthal Poonga and Semmozhi Poonga, with plans to connect these green spaces via a footbridge. The park has quickly become a popular destination, attracting approximately 500 visitors daily.
The addition of the Super Tree is anticipated to further enhance the park’s appeal, offering a blend of natural beauty and architectural innovation. With its emphasis on sustainability and community engagement, the Super Tree stands as a testament to Chennai’s commitment to creating inclusive and environmentally conscious urban spaces.
