Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to the Chief Ministers of eight non-BJP ruled states, calling for unity against the Centre’s attempt to weaken state powers through a Supreme Court reference.The Centre recently asked the Supreme Court 14 constitutional questions, which Stalin believes are meant to undermine a key judgment that limited governors’ powers over state bills.
Stalin said this move threatens federalism and accused the BJP-led government of using governors to block laws in opposition-ruled states.
He urged states like West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, and others to join forces and defend the Constitution’s federal structure with a united legal strategy.
Stalin described the Supreme Court’s earlier ruling as a landmark decision that protected the rights of elected state governments. He warned that the Centre’s new move, though not directly naming Tamil Nadu, clearly aims to challenge this judgment and reduce the autonomy of state administrations.
