A devastating incident unfolded in Valayankulam near Thiruparankundram, Madurai district.
A side wall of a house collapsed due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a child.
The victims were identified as 65-year-old Amma Pillai, her 10-year-old grandson Veeramani, and their neighbor Venkatti Ammal, aged 55. At approximately 7 PM, the trio was seated near the entrance of Amma Pillai’s residence when the wall suddenly gave way, burying them under the debris.
Neighbors promptly responded to the calamity, rescuing the injured and transporting them to Valayankulam Government Hospital. Venkatti Ammal was declared dead upon arrival. Amma Pillai and Veeramani were subsequently referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for further treatment but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the wall’s collapse.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by structural vulnerabilities, especially during periods of intense rainfall. Residents are urged to inspect their homes for any signs of structural weakness and to take necessary precautions during adverse weather conditions.
