Schools across Tamil Nadu reopened today, June 2, 2025, marking the commencement of the 2025–26 academic year for students from Classes 1 to 12. Following summer holidays that began on April 25, the Department of School Education confirmed the reopening date, despite earlier concerns about high temperatures. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai assured that peak summer conditions had subsided, allowing schools to resume as scheduled . In preparation for the new term, the education department dispatched uniforms and textbooks to schools statewide, ensuring their availability for distribution on the first day. Additional student kits are expected to be provided in the coming months. Minister of School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi emphasized the importance of timely distribution and urged district officials to verify transportation arrangements, particularly in rural areas, to facilitate students’ punctual arrival . The department also issued comprehensive guidelines to school administrations, outlining necessary pre-opening preparations and detailing the educational, co-curricular, and non-academic activities planned for the year. Admissions for the new academic session began on March 1, with a focus on achieving full enrollment in Class 1 . As schools reopen, the state is implementing several initiatives to enhance educational quality. Government primary schools are now equipped with smart boards, and middle schools have received high-tech labs to support digital learning. The ‘Thiran’ initiative aims to improve foundational skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic for students in Classes VI to VIII. Additionally, weekly ethics classes based on the Thirukkural are being introduced for students from Classes VI to XII to instill moral values .

In Trichy, over 2,100 schools have completed preparations, including cleaning, sanitization, and ensuring the availability of textbooks. The district education department has coordinated these efforts, emphasizing student safety through strict adherence to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, installation of complaint boxes, and awareness programs about personal safety
As the new academic year unfolds, Tamil Nadu’s schools are poised to provide a safe and enriched learning environment, reflecting the state’s commitment to educational excellence and student well-being.
