Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has strongly criticized the BJP-led central government for postponing the national Census to 2027. He alleges that this move is a deliberate strategy to reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament through a manipulated delimitation process.
According to the Indian Constitution, the delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies must follow the first Census conducted after 2026. Stalin contends that by delaying the Census to 2027, the BJP is setting the stage to redraw constituency boundaries in a manner that diminishes the political influence of southern states like Tamil Nadu, which have effectively controlled population growth .
Stalin also criticized AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami for his silence on the issue, accusing him of being complicit in the BJP’s alleged plan. He emphasized that the people of Tamil Nadu are united in demanding a fair and equitable delimitation process that does not penalize states for successful population control measures .
The Chief Minister has called on the Union government to provide clear and transparent explanations regarding the delay and its implications. He warned that the BJP’s actions could lead to a significant reduction in Tamil Nadu’s parliamentary representation, undermining the state’s role in national governance .
