Alstom to manufacture driverless metro trains for CMRL


For the manufacture or production of driverless metro trains in phase two of the Chennai Metro Rail project, a contract worth Rs 1538.35 has been signed now. Information gathered is that the first driverless metro train would be delivered by the year 2027.
Contract awarded to Alstom Transport India:
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL has awarded the contract to Alstom Transport India for the manufacture of 3 driverless trains in the second phase of the project. It is known that Alstom is a transportation equipment manufacturing company whose main objective would be to commit to a low carbon future.  The company is involved in the development of sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.
On behalf of CMRL, Mr. Manoj Goyal, director of systems and operations and Mr. Parag Nandhalal Gohel , director of Alstom Transport India. On 28th of April 2025 the letter of acceptance was issued to Alstom Transport India. The contract includes design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, training of personnel, complete maintenance of metro trains and workshop machinery for 15 years. As per the agreement, the first driverless metro train would be handed over to CMRL by 2027.
After this, there would be rigorous track and driverless operation trials that would be conducted for 14 long months. Point is that it would include integration testing with other systems and service trials etc. Finally, in phases from September 2027 to May 2028, all the driverless metro trains would be handed over to CMRL.
