Greenpeace India marks World Oceans Day with beach cleanup

On World Oceans Day 2025, Greenpeace India organized a beach cleanup at Besant Nagar Beach, Chennai, where 30 volunteers joined hands to collect waste and raise awareness. A large artwork of an Olive Ridley turtle was displayed, symbolizing the importance of protecting marine life.

The event also showed solidarity with Kerala, still reeling from the recent MSC ELSA 3 shipwreck that has polluted the coast with plastic and hazardous cargo. Greenpeace demanded full transparency from the shipping company and urged for accountability, cleanup, and support for affected fishing communities.

The event is part of a regional call to protect oceans ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in France, with Greenpeace stressing the need to ratify the High Seas Treaty and invest in coastal resilience.
