More lounges planned across city Chennai, June 12: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) inaugurated a dedicated lounge for gig workers at Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue on Wednesday. The facility was launched by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin from the Ripon Buildings as part of a broader rollout of civic projects. The lounge, styled with Scandinavian design and equipped with air-conditioning, is open 24/7. It offers seating, mobile charging stations, clean drinking water, and toilet facilities — all aimed at providing relief and dignity to platform-based workers like food delivery agents, cab drivers, and others who often spend long hours on the road. GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran said this move was in direct response to a request from the Gig Workers Welfare Association. He added that additional, larger lounges are in the pipeline for Thiruvanmiyur and Villivakkam, specifically for construction workers, while another gig worker facility will soon open at GN Chetty Road in T Nagar. Sharing his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister M. K. Stalin praised the project, noting that Anna Nagar has a large number of working women who will benefit from such welfare-driven spaces. The Corporation also plans to tap into Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to support the expansion of this project across more locations in the city. This initiative marks a new approach in urban governance, focusing on the comfort and dignity of the growing gig economy workforce.
