The Tamil Nadu government has announced the setting up of district-level headquarters hospitals across 19 districts, with an investment of over ₹1,000 crore .
This initiative is part of a broader healthcare strengthening plan aiming to upgrade infrastructure and improve access to advanced medical facilities at the district level.
Finance Minister Ma Subramanian revealed that ₹1,018.85 crore has been allocated under the state’s hospital enhancement scheme. The plan includes the creation of 19 district headquarters hospitals and five upgraded government hospitals in areas like Tenkasi, Kulithalai, Thiruchengodu, Ambasamuthram, and Rajapalayam
Additionally, integrated diagnostic labs are being established in 12 districts for ₹15 crore to boost diagnostic services

These new hospitals will offer advanced medical care and reduce the need for patients to travel to metropolitan areas. This development supports Chennai’s growing role as India’s healthcare capital, a hub that attracts foreign and domestic medical tourists thanks to its quality services and affordable treatment rates . Patients will benefit from better care closer to home, making healthcare more accessible and equitable across the state.
