Southern Railway has initiated a Final Location Survey (FLS) to double the railway track between Chengalpattu and Arakkonam via Kancheepuram and Thirumalpur. The move aims to reduce congestion and enable direct suburban train services between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu, avoiding the longer circular route through Chennai Beach. The project includes a proposed branching line from Palur to Paranur, offering additional connectivity. The existing single-track route, which passes through nine stations including Reddipalayam, Palur, Walajabad, and Kancheepuram, is crucial for both passenger travel and freight movement, especially agricultural and industrial goods.
Once completed, the track doubling will benefit over 10 lakh daily suburban commuters on this busy corridor, improving efficiency and reducing travel time.
