Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched 50 free drinking water vending machines across key public locations in Chennai as part of a clean water access.
The units are set up in high-traffic areas including Marina Beach, bus terminals, parks, temples, and markets across 15 zones such as Adyar, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Royapuram, Madhavaram, and Manali.
The machines dispense 150 ml and 1-litre purified Metro Water at no cost, aimed at serving daily-wage workers, the underprivileged, and general public.
Each unit includes IoT-based sensors that notify officials when water is low and CCTV cameras for safety and monitoring.
Residents welcomed the move, reminiscing the earlier “Amma Kudineer” project, and stressed the importance of regular upkeep for success.
Officials highlighted that the scheme not only ensures hydration but also encourages reduced use of plastic bottles, aligning with eco-friendly goals.
