From its opening moments in a government hospital in Keezhkattalai, DNA sets a compelling tone—one rooted in tragedy, compassion, and intrigue. A fatal accident in 2014 involving an exhausted doctor and a young couple leaves behind an orphaned newborn. Fast forward to 2023, the stage is set for an emotional rollercoaster.
Enter Anand (Atharvaa Murali), a man scarred by past love, cautiously embracing a new beginning with Divya (Nimisha Sajayan). Their marriage feels warm and real—until a twist arrives like lightning in calm skies: a baby appears, and Divya insists she has no idea where it came from. What unfolds next is a moving and layered journey filled with revelations, some shocking, others tender.
Atharvaa delivers a career-best performance here. He wears Anand’s emotional baggage with heartbreaking grace. Whether it’s confusion, frustration, or grief, his eyes say more than words. Nimisha Sajayan is equally impressive—subtle, composed, and deeply expressive. Their chemistry is understated but honest, and that’s what makes it work.
The first half of DNA is taut and gripping. There’s a looming mystery that draws you in, and the interval twist—small but smart—adds the right spice. The second half leans into themes of trauma, lost identity, and unconditional love, with an emotional payoff that lingers.
Ghibran’s background score swells at just the right moments, amplifying every beat of emotion, while the cinematography adds a poetic charm to the story’s darker undercurrents. Even the shadows seem to speak.
However, not all elements land smoothly. A jarring item number disrupts the emotional flow and some plot turns feel a tad too convenient. But these are minor bumps in an otherwise well-driven narrative.
Director Nelson Venkatesan deserves credit for weaving a commercial film with an emotional heart. DNA may not redefine thrillers, but it connects—because its emotions are genuine, its characters flawed and relatable, and its story rooted in love, loss, and rediscovery.
