Chennai, June 30:
Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister S. Sivasankar has clarified that there is no increase in electricity tariff for domestic consumers. Dismissing rumors circulating on social media, he assured the public that the government has not issued any order to raise electricity charges for households.
In a statement to the press, the minister emphasized that all existing schemes, including the popular 100 units of free electricity for domestic connections, will continue without change. He added that the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has not announced any new tariff hike for domestic users.
Minister Sivasankar explained that even if TNERC proposes a revision in tariffs based on inflation data, the state government—under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin—will ensure that domestic consumers are not affected. The government will continue to provide subsidies to shield the public from any financial burden.
He also pointed out that in previous years, the state government had absorbed the impact of tariff revisions. For example, in 2023 and 2024, despite approved increases, the burden was not passed on to the people due to government support.
The minister urged the public not to believe baseless information being spread online and reassured that uninterrupted power supply and consumer welfare remain the government’s top priorities.
