In a significant development in the Rithanya suicide case, the mother-in-law of the deceased, identified as Nandhini, has been arrested by the police on charges of domestic harassment.

Rithanya, a young woman from Tamil Nadu, had recently died by suicide under suspicious circumstances, triggering widespread public outrage and demands for justice. Investigations revealed that she had been facing alleged mental and emotional harassment from her in-laws, particularly her mother-in-law.

Based on a complaint filed by Rithanya’s family and supporting evidence, police arrested Nandhini and charged her under relevant sections pertaining to abetment of suicide and domestic cruelty. The arrest was made following preliminary inquiries that indicated a pattern of ongoing harassment, which may have contributed to Rithanya’s tragic decision.

The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding dowry harassment and the safety of women within marital homes, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women from abuse.

Further investigation is underway, and police are expected to question other members of the household to uncover the full extent of the alleged abuse.
