The Madras High Court has refused to close the suo motu case against former Minister K. Ponmudy for making lewd remarks involving Shaivite and Vaishnavite religious symbols.
Ponmudy made the comments during a TPDK meeting on April 8, sparking public outrage and his removal from the DMK Deputy General Secretary post.
Though police closed over 120 complaints, Justice P. Velmurugan said freedom of speech has limits and public figures must act responsibly. He criticised the police for concluding it wasn’t hate speech without a full probe.
The court also ordered that all complainants must be properly informed. The case is now adjourned to August 1.
